Key West Beaches: Discover the Best Spots

Palm trees casting long shadows on a sandy beach at sunset.

Where is the beach?

Everyone dreams of a perfect island beach! We have several beautiful options for beaches in Key West. Pictured here is Smathers Beach at sunrise, the largest beach in the area, conveniently located adjacent to the airport. Here, you can enjoy soft sandy shores, public restrooms, chair and umbrella rentals, as well as hobie catamaran rentals, parasailing, and paddleboard rentals. *Free access

Higgs Beach is situated between the Casa Marina Resort and White Street Pier. This beach features soft sand, though it's a bit smaller than Smathers Beach. Amenities here include public restrooms, pickleball courts, children's play areas, and dog parks. *Free access

South Beach, located at the southern end of Duval Street, is a small public beach offering chair and umbrella rentals. There's also a restaurant bordering the beach where you can purchase food and drinks. This beach has soft sandy areas; however, strong winds can stir the water, making it murky. *Free access

Fort Zachary Taylor, commonly known among locals as “the best beach,” offers plenty of shade thanks to its Australian pines. With your entrance fee, you can tour the historic Civil War fort (which boasts the best ocean pics on the island!), visit the beach, and use the cookout areas equipped with picnic tables and grills. You can swim, snorkel, or fish here. The beach features a mix of sandy and rocky areas, so wearing beach shoes is encouraged. Public bathrooms and outdoor showers are available, along with a concession stand selling food and beach supplies. Beach chair and umbrella rentals, as well as snorkel kit rentals, are offered too. On calm wind days, Fort Zachary Taylor is an excellent spot to practice snorkeling; simply sit down, put on your gear, and glide away! Experienced snorkelers should head towards the rock pile off the beach to spot tropical fish, rays, and perhaps even a tarpon! The park remains open until sunset, providing wonderful photo opportunities and a serene experience. *$6 per vehicle, $2.50 per person walking/bicycle.
